Abstract

Although computers can perform most of the tasks in an automated production system, some important tasks, such as visual inspection and defect diagnosis tasks which determine the quality of the system, mainly rely on human performance. The production system of a glass bottle plant was studied by conducting two experiments. The results of the first experiment, dealing with an inspection task, indicated that the computer aiding should focus on simplifying the human decision process in inspecting items. The second experiment, concerned with computer aiding diagnosis task, revealed that human performance in the mixed arrangement of mechanical and environmental factors was better than the separated arrangement condition. The results also showed that the degree of computer aiding had significant effect on the improvement of human defect diagnosis performance.
