This is a delightful read (for the non-entomophobe) about one woman's journey to discover all she can about the biology, history, sociology, and resurgence of the bed bug, Cimex lectularius . The interest of the author to embark on writing this small treatise – part travelogue, part science journalism, and part nonfiction mystery – arose from her long-undiagnosed bites that originated within her New York City apartment in 2004. After discovering what the bites were, the author obsessively learned all she could about these nighttime mini-vampires. Clearly, the bed bugs chose the wrong woman to bite – a skilled science writer. Ms. Borel may, through her journalism, help change public misunderstanding of bed bugs.
