Abstract

Yellow protein derived from European and Pakistani human nuclear cataractous lenses was digested. Anthranilic acid was found in 50 times greater amount in Pakistani than in European material. Treating tryptophan with free radicals, near-UV light and hydrogen peroxide, it was shown that only with hydrogen peroxide anthranilic acid was produced. Hydrogen peroxide might be the common factor involved in the development of nuclear cataract in old human lenses.
