Abstract

Protection against invading organisms is of principal importance in human skin. Besides a physical shield consisting of coherent layers of dead stratum corneum cells, antimicrobial defense is further provided by the generation of defensins by epithelial cells and phagocytes, especially neutrophilic granulocytes. These appear to be of major importance in preventing microbial infection after wounding and in maintaining an intact mucous membrane ecology. The generation of defensins by epithelial cells (keratinocytes) and granulocytes provides an synergistic defense armentarium, which is beginning to be fully understood.
