Abstract

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) destructs the human’s immune system and leaves patients vulnerable to life-threatening opportunistic infections, malignancies and death. Palliative care plays an important role in HIV infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Meeting all the needs of the patient, including psychosocial, spiritual, emotional and medical needs, is the ultimate goal of HIV care. As HIV caregivers, the goal is to alleviate suffering whether it is emotional or physical pain. The story of HIV/AIDS epidemic and the role of palliative care in the pre- and post-highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) eras will be explored in this article.
