Abstract
A laboratory technician engaged in research on Bedsoniae developed a follicular conjunctivitis. A Bedsonia was isolated from conjunctival scrapings by two different laboratories. Experimental infection of subhuman primates resulted in a follicular conjunctivitis. The isolate was characterized as a psittacosis agent and clearly differentiated from the TRIC agents which had been thought to be the only Bedsoniae capable of producing follicular conjunctivitis in man. The validity of using tissue tropisms as taxonomic tools within the Bedsoniae is questioned.
