Abstract
Due to increased pressure to accommodate higher levels of air traffic, the UK National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has embarked on several major projects to build and support new Air Traffic Control Centres (ATCCs) and associated Air Traffic Management Systems (ATMS). This paper describes early input to the development of workstations to be used in the New EnRoute Centre (MERC) programme by the Human Factors Unit based at the Air Traffic Management Development Centre (ATMDC). The building of a prototyping environment and the conduct of anthropometric trials are described. Two case studies dealing with the positioning of information display screens and the selection of input/output devices are detailed. The paper then describes the development of a set of Human Factors guidelines specifically being developed to be used by project staff within an ATC environment. This will ensure the strategic application of Human Factors at an appropriate stage in the project and therefore the safety, usability and consistency of HMI designs.
