Abstract
As part of the Advanced Flight Deck Technology Project (AFDTII) a human factors team is developing and applying an innovative human centred design process (HCDP) to the development of advanced civil flight deck technologies. This activity is carried out in preparation for future human factors certification. The process includes (1) a workshop (2) a series of human centred design reviews, (3) a human engineering programme plan, (4) the use of human centred design philosophies and (5) the development of a directory of best practices and human factors tools and techniques. With each step of the process, the experiences of Stewart Hughes Ltd, who are developing a carefree handling system, are reported. The development and application of the HCDP has been useful to avionics suppliers, airframe manufacturers and human factors specialists, providing a framework for collaboration when preparing to meet future human factors certification requirements.
