Abstract

A study showing that black-white relations in Van Diemen's Land, especially in Pallittorre country, were complex and problematic is presented. A historical debate accompanying the High Court's Mabo decision and the subsequent Native Title Act 1993 is one way of controlling the memories that nourish national consciousness and thus shapes the future.
