Abstract

A methodology, described earlier for the calculation of unreacted Hugoniots of both neat explosives and their mixtures, was used in this paper for elastomeric binder systems of various plastic-bonded explosives (PBXs). When this methodology was used to extract Hugoniot data for binder systems from Hugoniot data of cast PBXs, it was found that the resultant data are in reasonable agreement with the limited Hugoniot data available in the literature for polyurethane/HTPB binder systems. The influence on the binder systems’ Hugoniots from reaction and from microporosity in the crystals of the neat explosives (HMX, RDX and/or AP) is discussed.
