Abstract

A brief retrospective journey into the history of the formation of religious education in Europe and Russia is made. The greatest attention is paid to the Middle Ages and the New Age. General aspects and criteria of religious education in a secular state are considered. The participation of the state and the church in educational policy and public education is shown. The materials of the article can be useful in the study of the General History and the History of Pedagogy.
