Abstract

Based on Philippe Goujard's concept of heroism and heroisation as outlined by Michel Vovelle this article tries to illustrate the process at work in the poetry of Philip Freneau during the American and French Revolutions from 1775 through 1798. Among others Louis XVI is a pivotal image which reveals the poet's changing opinions on actors as well as his visceral attachment to freedom.
