Abstract

A recent article in the Mail on Sunday highlights the link between oral health and a range of health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, the same newspaper , on the online facility (12 January 2010) has provided an additional report highlighting the potential for patients to benefit from the medical experience of dentists in recognising systemic medical conditions.With the call from the Steele report for dentists to become part of public health strategy, this may be a good opportunity for the dental profession to regain its reputation as general health providers, particularly as dentists have access to young male patients from an early age, a group renowned for its reluctance to attend the primary medical services.
