Abstract
In this paper we address an often implicit question in critiques of the mining industry's contribution to sustainable development: How would a mining sector that was committed to delivering sustainable development behave? We set out 8 behaviours we believe a mining sector that was committed to sustainable development would embrace: (1) Insist of cleaner production methods, (2) accept limits, (3) embrace recycling, (4) admit fault and tradeoffs, (5) police itself, (6) embrace transparency and systematic monitoring, (7) accept and respect external regulation and, (8) pay its way. We then discuss next steps to move towards this.
