Abstract

This presenter symposium examines the evolution of research and language in management and related fields on the phenomenon of individuals crossing borders and engaging in entrepreneurship. Decades of research have referred to these individuals alternatively as ‘transnationals’, ‘immigrants’, ‘migrants’, ‘emigrants’, ‘expatriates’, ‘diasporans’ and ‘cosmopolitans’. The symposium will stimulate discussion on how this change in language by management scholars changes how readers and students of our work, as well as managers, likely view the role of such individuals over time at both their home and host countries. In the spirit of the all academy theme ‘The Power of Words’, this presenter symposium features four paper presentations and audience engagement opportunities to analyze these individuals, their home- and host-country commercial activities, and the importance of changing descriptors for the way we see such individuals and their activities in our research. Three papers highlight shifts in language affecting the way management scholars and readers perceive and analyze such cross-border individuals and their commercial activities in host countries; a fourth paper highlights research in home countries. Symposium activities will also include a real-time poll of symposium attendees to gauge their own perceptions of such individuals and their activities based on the labels used to describe the individuals. The overall aim of this symposium is to showcase new management research on these cross-border individuals and their activities, and demonstrate how the evolution of language changes the way we perceive and analyze both.
