Abstract

The Patient Doctor III course at Harvard Medical School is designed to help third year students adjust to the clinical setting. The students meet once a week in small groups with tutors, to talk about their experiences on the wards and topics of importance to reflective practice, such as ethics, giving bad news and end of life decision making. As part of the curriculum, the students are asked to take a role in quality improvement by focusing on a problem they have identified, working out a framework for change and presenting a summary to their fellow students, faculty and medical school administration. The observations and recommendations of the students are carefully considered and used to implement directions for change in the medical school. We are pleased to present one of these group projects along with faculty commentary in the Reflections section. Susan Pories, MD Reflections editor
