Abstract

Abstract This paper describes how 467 sets of case notes from the Bethlem and Maudsley Hospitals were assessed for evidence of a criminal record. Data were checked with the Criminal Records Office. The results show that psychiatric case notes reliably discriminate offenders from non-offenders, but only for males. Case notes do not contain accurate data on frequency or type of offences
