Abstract
Since I wouldn't want to embarrass you, I will not ask what you know about Hungary, or if you can pinpoint it on a map. Instead, let me help you out. If you are a physicist or a mathematician, you might be interested to know that Hungary is the place where Dennis Gabor (inventor of the hologram) was born; as were Emo Rubik (creator of the Rubik cube), Leo Szilard (who first conceived the idea of a nuclear chain reaction), Edward Teller (“father” of the H-bomb), John von Neumann (creator of the modem electronic computer) and Eugene Wigner, the Nobel prize-winning nuclear physicist who died last month (see p62). And yes, it is that smallish country located at the very centre of Europe.
