Abstract

With this 8th edition in 2018 of the Looking China project started in 2011, certain filmmaking strategies identify films most likely to score highly amongst international judges in the project’s Golden Lenses Awards. Based on individual scoring of the total field of 2018 entrant’s films, Part 1 of this paper tests a variety of narrative approaches and practical techniques that may assist non-Chinese student filmmakers deepen and widen the appeal of their work in communicating Chinese cultural themes accurately and succinctly to international audiences. Part 2 of this paper examines Western developments in assessment criteria that may be useful for teachers benchmarking Looking China with foreign standards in the future.
