Abstract

Nikolay M. Nikolsky began to study ancient Phoenician history after the discoveries in Ras-Shamra (Ugarit) in the late 1930s. However, the preparation of a monograph on Phoenician mythology was interrupted by the outbreak of war. N. Nikolsky did not have time to evacuate from Minsk and continued to work on the text in the occupation. The final version of the monograph was completed during his stay in the partisan detachment. Shortly after the war, this “partisan” monograph was published. However, the author’s lack of access to the new literature in the war years turned into criticism of many provisions of the monograph in Soviet historical science, although all reviewers emphasized the courage of N. Nikolsky needed in order to preserve and prepare the text for the publishing in military circumstances.
