Abstract
Overall Abstract It is now obvious that for GWAS more is better, and this is particularly true for psychiatric traits, as attested by recent advances for depression. Attaining N=1,000,000 seems a feasible and desirable aim for MDD and for other mental disorders. A corollary is that traditional clinical diagnosis is not feasible and that other minimal phenotyping approaches will be needed. This symposium will review a number of such approaches now underway, or contemplated. Advantages of accruing such a large sample will be reviewed, including explorations of heterogeneity, pleiotropy, and causation, and power considerations will be featured.
