Abstract

This is a bad book. It is not addressed to physicians but rather to "teenagers, their parents, their friends, and all concerned individuals," to make available to them "thetruthabout the dangers of drug addiction" (emphasis added). It is worth a brief review here only so that physicians in search of a volume to recommend to concerned patients and their families should be aware that this isnotthe book for them to advise. Not only is it filled with inaccuracies, but its presentation is simple-minded and condescending. At best, the lay reader will be reassured falsely by prescriptions contained here; at worst, he may be prevented from the very serious study of addiction problems essential to its understanding. The book is padded with a question and answer section that is unilluminating, a diet section that is unnecessary, and appendices that are incomplete.
