Abstract

One of the trickiest situations facing a nonunion employer occurs when a union “demands recognition” for a group of employees based on the fact the majority of employees in the group have signed union membership cards. Mishandling of a union's demand for recognition can lead to unintended unionization. Most managers lack in‐depth training on the National Labor Relations Act, which puts them in a precarious position when a union demands so‐called “card‐check” recognition. This article is a quick study on how to handle a union's demand for recognition.
