Abstract

Civic mindedness and engagement are considered components of medical professionalism. Among its core obligations, the American Medical Association Declaration of Professional Responsibility pledges “advocacy for social, economic, educational and political changes for human well-being” and “education of the public and polity”.1 Civic engagement by medical trainees and physicians can include a variety of activities such as community service, volunteerism, community-engaged research, service learning, and advocacy among others.
