Abstract

Tobacco smoking is a chronic disorder based on nicotine dependence and is the single most reversible risk factor of cardiovascular diseases.1 This primer provides an overview of evidence-based smoking cessation interventions, pharmacological and nonpharmacological. Interventions with limited or conflicting data are also discussed. These recommendations are intended for clinicians (physicians and nonphysicians) because smoking cessation services is a fundamental responsibility for health care providers in all settings.
