Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical introduction to Gustaaf Houtman’s work on the contemporary political situation in Burma in order to make this work better known beyond the circles of Burma scholars and in order to discuss its author’s stance. Houtman has propounded the most sophisticated interpretation of the current Burmese military regime, of its ideology and policy. Yet, it is argued, he has not drawn the obvious conclusion his work inspires, that is, “ the generals” are first and foremost Burmese, and their world view a product of Burmese culture.
