Abstract

Abstract The item which follows, taken from the Juniata Sentinel Republican, Pennsylvania (7th October 1874), is an example of the sentimental stories in 19th -century popular literature in which the dog was demonstrated to be a proper member of the family, that is, the dog is anthropomorphized. In his symbolic role of a child, Caesar is ftrst naughty but then realises the seriousness of his misbehaviour, and returns to the daguerreotypist to have his picture taken, thus making him a fully-fledged member of the family.
