Abstract

We investigate the strange quark helicity contribution Δs to the spinof the proton in a linear chiral model of quark and gluon confinement, incorporating the effects of SU(3) symmetry breaking. For realistic values of the model parameters, we find no evidence for a large strange quark content of the proton, although the value of the pion-nucleon sigma-term is consistent with scattering data. Furthermore, the strange quark sea, if any,is not polarized, |Δ |< 4×10 −3. At the same time, our results for the contributions of the non-strange quark helicities to the spin of the proton are consistent with the revised EMC data, showing no need for an anomalous gluon contribution.
