Abstract

Until now, the durability design of concrete structures mainly uses a concept in which the performance is verified primarily with Deemed-to-Satisfy (DtS) rules (concrete composition, concrete cover) based on experience. A new concrete durability concept has been developed named Exposure Resistance Classes (ERC) system. The ERC-concept is discussed as an example of a performance-based approach together with the latest development in cement standards in Europe. For solving future challenges, performance concepts are seen as an opportunity to substitute prescriptive approaches by giving more flexibility in applying new technical solutions. The challenge will be to come up with an appropriate mix of descriptive regulations and performance-related approaches. Further developments in cement and concrete standardisation should provide simple and robust rules for most applications with low or moderate requirements and appropriate and safe solutions for applications under severe conditions (performance-approach for durability).
