Abstract
The answer to this question will be attempted by looking at the high profile computer-related crimes which have occurred over teh past decade, all of which have produced learning points for law enforcement and the judicial process. Cases worthy of mention are ‘Prestel Hackers’ (Robert Schifreen and Steven Gold), the ‘Mad Hacker’ (Nicholas Whitely) and members of 81gm (Strickland, Bedworth and Woods). The threats experienced by private and public businesses are identical and no distinction is made by the criminal fraternity.
