Abstract

A simple model of Coulomb fission which includes Coulomb excitation of rotational states and beta vibrational motion in a finite, two-humped barrier, is described. This model is used to investigate the possible existence of a prompt component in which fission occurs when target and projectile are near to the point the results imply that prompt fission is negligible.
