Abstract

ABSTRACTStealth has changed the way we fight, and has become a key performance parameter of many of our premier weapon systems. This paper addresses the importance of stealth for the next generation surface combatant. Stealth is first defined and the fundamen‐ tals presented. Its effects on the enemy's lull chain are discussed. Examples are presented to show how stealth can fundamentally change ship survivability and improve mission effectiveness. Arguments against stealth are addressed including the need to radiate active sensors, cost and perishability. Assertion is made that the issue for the next surface combatant is not whether to incorporate stealth, but rather how much?
