Abstract

Large ceiling fans were introduced in the 1990s. Since then, there has been significant research and development in their aerodynamics, airflow characteristics, blade design, speed control and noise levels. An improved technique for quantifying the cooling effect of air speed on people has identified increased energy saving and summer thermal comfort enhancement opportunities from large ceiling fans. De-stratification in large spaces with high ceilings, using large ceiling fans, has delivered significant savings in winter heating costs. The choice of large ceiling fans and appropriate installation is important in achieving optimum fan performance.
