Abstract

According to Phillip Melanchthon, when Martin Luther refused to recant his teaching before the Imperial Diet at Worms on April 18, 1521, his closing flourish began with the words, "Hie[r] stehe ich." Today these words are widely known among English speakers as "Here I stand."
