Abstract

AbstractLeaders can transform themselves after even what seems like a major setback, in the view of the author, who opens with information about her disastrous tenure in 1987 as a 29‐year‐old, as one of the first female commodities traders on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. She eventually transformed into becoming CEO of Jody Michael Associates, a coaching company specializing in executive coaching, leadership development, and career coaching. She poses such “decision point” questions as “What kind of leader are you going to be right now?” and “How are you going to align yourself internally right now with what you are trying to achieve?” She says that your “ability to leverage these thousands of choice points throughout each day—to sustainably create high performance no matter what may be going on—is what I call ’mental fitness.’ Mental fitness increases your capacity, impact, and influence as a leader.” Her definition of the term is “Mental fitness™ is your measurable ability to engage constructively in life and work every day, no matter what stressors you encounter. It is your capacity to consistently respond to challenges with optimal performance in the moment and minimal recovery time afterward.”
