Abstract

In describing qq̄ systems we assume the validity of a nonrelativistic treatment and the flavour independence of the quark forces. Then we find by using the Feynman-Hellmann theorem the following bounds for the masses of the quarks: 0.23 ⩽ Mu (=Md) ⩽ 0.40 GeV, 0.50 ⩽ Ms ⩽ 0.75 GeV, 1.73 ⩽ Mc ⩽ 2.00 GeV, 5.03 ⩽ Mb ⩽ 5.55 GeV.
