Abstract

There has been much concern expressed in both the medical literature and the public media recently about the reforms to the training of junior doctors. We have yet to see the full impact of these reforms, and the picture may become clearer once August is upon us. The British Medical Association (BMA) has expressed concern about the latest figures, which show that 34 250 doctors are chasing 18 500 specialist training posts in the UK (BMA, 2007). The government has suggested that those junior doctors who were unsuccessful in obtaining a training place would be able to remain employed in the NHS in staff grade posts, which do not qualify as training posts.
