Abstract

Cu/Zn-SOD can reduce vascular permeability increase and edema, and protect cardiac contractility depression caused by oxygen-derived free radicals. These advantages can just make up the flaw of inappropriate fluid replacement in burn treatment. In this study, we treat the burn-injured rats with the papaya Cu/Zn-SOD to see if it can compensate the problem of inadequate fluid resuscitation. The rats with 70% body surface area second-degree burn were created. There were three experimental groups: inadequate resuscitation + SOD group, adequate resuscitation group, and inadequate resuscitation group. Punch biopsy specimens of the injured skin were obtained for water content calculation. Survival was checked for 14 days. The water content of skin increased gradually after scald burn in all three groups. There was no significant difference in skin water content among these three groups at all the time points after burn injury. The survival rate of the inadequate resuscitation + SOD group was 94.74%, and is significant higher than that of the inadequate resuscitation group, 77.78%. Histological examination of the skin, liver and lung specimens revealed no apparent acute inflammation in all three groups. Administration of Cu/Zn-SOD may protect burn rats from delayed fluid resuscitation and decrease the amount of fluid resuscitation.
