Abstract

• The rise of civic engagement in the era of urban transformation deserves attention. • This study is based on data from 39 urban neighbourhoods in Guangzhou, China. • Social-capital and community-psychology approaches to activism are synthesized. • The neighborhood effect is differentiated by specific forms of civic engagement. • Both spatial and social embeddedness of neighborhood activism should be considered.
