Abstract

How the European Union (EU) treats the agreements concluded by its member states is more about whether and under what conditions these treaties are authorized. In some cases, not only authorized, some treaties acceded by members have binding effect on EU. However, considering EU's stand in these two cases and their correlation with general international law, one can see the double standard being applied by EU in any presumable conflict emerging between international obligations of members and those they have under European laws or treaties concluded by EU. The author tries to examine any such conflict from an international law point of view and how the Union's approach is at variance with international standards.
