Abstract

This month's question addresses the safety of water additives and appurtenances. The article recommends reviewing all packaging and promotional literature to identify which performance claims have actually been verified by a certification body. The article states that NSF 60 is recommended for drinking water system components, and NSF 61 for drinking water treatment chemicals. The article explains the development of NSF standards, discusses the difference between NSF standards and AWWA standards, and defines a harmful additive or application. The current NSF health‐based performance standards for drinking water are given.
