Abstract

Plasma-membrane glutamate transporters move the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain, glutamate, across the membrane against its concentration gradient. This uphill transport is achieved by coupling transmembrane glutamate movement to the cotransport of three Na+ ions down their own concentration gradient. In addition, one potassium ion is countertransported.
