How can we remove barriers to increased usage of indigenous crops?

Abstract

Improved exploitation of indigenous crops is constrained by difficulties along the value chain. Crop-Innovations provides scientific research capabilities and expertise to understand and remove barriers to increased value of indigenous and underutilised species. Crop-Innovations works with partners, such as the University of Bangor and Self Help Africa, to bring the benefit of scientific advances to rural households. A range of case studies demonstrate how scientific research can solve problems along the value chain and ensure greater food, income and nutritional security. These case studies also indicate that future research priorities should aim to improve systems and processes that can be adapted for, and promote use of, a wide range of crop species.
