Abstract

Katz's (1960) theory of the Functional Approach to Attitude Change is applied to the largely atheoretical world of health care professionals' attitudes toward older adults. A brief summary of the research on health care professionals' attitudes toward older adults is presented and the application of Katz's theory to these attitudes is explored in depth. Empirical studies which test even trace elements of this theory are examined. Directions for future research are suggested, and social workers, possessing so many relevant skills and holding positions in the health care arena, are encouraged to become actively involved.
