Abstract

Estimates suggest that around 0.5% of the UK population are transgender. This paper offers some useful information and advice to help surgeons be transgender inclusive. This includes: understanding terminology; recognising that transgender people are a diverse group; treating transgender patients with dignity and respect; respecting gender diverse people’s identities; avoiding inappropriately ‘outing’ transgender patients and colleagues; discretion regarding personal questions; and awareness of barriers to care, differing healthcare needs and ‘trans broken arm syndrome’. The paper ends with signposting to local and national guidance and consultancy services.
