Abstract

Hypermedia permit the representation of knowledge as a richly interconnected set of text, images, dynamic sequences, and more. This paper describes the development and evaluation of a series of hypermedia tools designed to help students as they learn to program in Pascal or Lisp. These tools took advantage of hypermedia connections to illustrate how experts organize programming knowledge or to encourage students to organize their knowledge more effectively. Each new tool addressed some of the limitations of the tools that preceded it. This paper communicates the process and progress of the design of these hypermedia tools and suggests directions for the use of hypermedia to foster integrated understanding.
