Abstract

The technique of 24-h indirect ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is gaining importance in the diagnosis and therapy of arterial hypertension. Devices with different measuring methods (auscultatory, oscillometric, or both) and individual choice of measuring intervals are available. The devices of the newest generation allow about 80 readings of systolic and diastolic values. At least 80 readings in 24 h are recommended in the Berlin Consensus Document of 1990. Mean systolic and diastolic pressure values during day- and nighttime and the number of readings above normal levels (WHO criteria) are calculated. The newly offered devices are light in weight, the pump is soft, the handling is easy, but the equipment is still expensive.
