Abstract

Mechanisms controlling skin heterogeneity are poorly understood. In this issue of Developmental Cell, Liang etal. show that in chicken, the difference in β-keratin genes expressed in feathered and scaly skin is regulated via typical enhancers, while differential expression within individual feathers correlates with chromatin looping within the gene cluster.
