Abstract

Our homes and the nearby environment can have enormous impacts on health. Some factors have immediate and measurable impacts. Others, such as multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), are more difficult to define and measure. MCS is controversial. As housing professionals, we are not qualified to diagnose MCS, nonetheless, a basic understanding of MCS is important to address healthy homes issues in our classrooms, research, and practice. The purpose of this study was not to dispute or validate MCS, but instead, to provide some insight about chemicals in the home environment and sensitivities in a selected sample.
