Abstract
We now recognize that the abuse of mood changing drugs is extensive, involving all ages and socio-economic classes. This abuse extends to the typical middle-class housewife involving legal drugs consciously used for purposes other than pleasure. The problem is that many of these housewives shop from physician to physician to maintain a drug regimen no physician would prescribe. Newer drugs now available with fewer side effects and abuse liability problems should be considered in place of the original amphetamine and barbiturate agents.
